While the terrorist group is said to have been weakened, Boko Haram has multiplied its deadly attacks in the Northeast of Nigeria and in the Far North of Cameroon.
On Saturday night, gunmen, suspected to be members of Boko Haram, attacked Mailari village in Konduga (East of Nigeria). Nine villagers were killed and 10 others wounded, reported BBC Africa. They were sent to a hospital in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, for treatment.
Nearly 140 died last weekend
This new attack came after that of the previous weekend, which was particularly deadly. Nearly 140 people were killed in Maiduguri and Monguno during a series of explosions. The Nigerian Army said they recently scored decisive victories against the Islamist sect.
They claimed to have captured nearly 200 rebel fighters on Friday while 241 women and children were said to have been saved in several military operations on Wedneasday. In early August, the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari had given security forces three months to put an end to an insurgency that has already caused the death of at least 17,000 people and the displacement of two million others, since 2009.
Dozens of bombings since July in the Extreme North of Cameroon
In the Extreme North of Cameroon, other assailants attacked the Tikal village near the Hile Hifa district around 9: 00 pm. Eight villagers were killed.
“When they arrived in the night, they first disabled the MTN antenna (local telephone company) in order to prevent us from alerting the defense forces. Then they burnt some shops in the market and three houses. Before fleeing, they killed seven villagers,” said one survivor who spoke to Cameroon - info.net.
This region on the porous border with Nigeria is also the target of an upsurge of attacks attributed to Boko Haram. On September 16, 12 other people were killed and two military vehicles were destroyed in Dabanga, near the Nigerian border. Dozens of attacks have taken place in Northern Cameroon since July.
