In communion with the international community, Cameroon celebrated the 29th edition of the World Habitat Day yesterday.

Placed under the theme ‘Public spaces for all’, this year’s celebration placed special emphasis on raising awareness of the populations so that they keep the environment intact.

The findings were clear. The streets and public spaces have often been neglected and underestimated, but they are increasingly seen as the backbone of cities. On the occasion of the 29th edition of the World Habitat Day, Minister Jean Claude Mbwentchou, during a press conference, explained the contours of this celebration.

“Beautiful public spaces facilitate community cohesion and create happiness, health and well-being for all citizens. They also encourage investment, economic development and the protection of the environment", said the Minister of Housing and Urban Development. He also retained that public spaces, well-designed and well-managed, streets are a capital asset for sustainability and the economy of a city.

World Habitat Day is celebrated on the first Monday of October. The purpose of the said day is intended to call for reflection on the state of towns and cities, and the fundamental right of each individual to decent housing. It is also intended to remind each and everyone that they all have the ability and the responsibility to build the future of cities.

In Cameroon, the activities marking the 29th edition of the habitat day will take place until the end of October. For Minister Jean Claude Mbwentchou, these activities will ensure the promotion of community cohesion and safety for all citizens through the holding of events in public spaces and streets.
