Trade Minister, Luc Magloire Atangana Mbarga, announced few days ago that the price of rice will not increase, but this will be the case until the stocks available elapsed.
"We still have a large stock of rice," said Representative of South-East-Central Soacam Distributor Company of consumer products, quoted by Quotidien Emergence of Friday, January 15, 2016.
During the consultation which took place between the Minister of Trade and actors of the distribution of mass products sector, the Minister of Trade has insisted that distributors must sell rice stocks exempt from tax 5% applicable from January 2016.
"This presupposes that the entry into force of the Finance Act 2016 will result in the increase in rice prices, regardless of the equation to be solved by the end of the year," reported the newspaper.
To avoid a situation similar to that of the February 2008 riots of hunger, the government is reassuring "giving new directions with the bonus of a willingness controlling inflation. He promised to make every effort to achieve it.
According to statistics, 8 out of 10 families consume a plate of rice a day. Rice is, therefore, the most accessible and most consumed commodity in Cameroon. A very large increase could starve some families.
