The government has decided to entrust the exploitation of the slope of the Sanaga to Electricity Development Group Corporation (EDC), which supports the construction of the Lom Pangar hydroelectric dam in the Eastern Region.

Le Quotidien de l’Economie (LQE) newspaper released the above information which was formalized in the recent 2nd Workshop IWRM (Integrated management of water resources in the river Sanaga) held in Yaoundé.

"... The next reservoir creation of six billion cubic meters of water on the Sanaga will impact local populations," it said in the newspaper.

EQA stated that "EDC will market the energy produced by the said tank and will have to find the balance needed to regulate the activities developed in its grip: hydroelectricity, hydropower, urban and village, industries, agriculture, livestock and fishing".

According to Nsangou Theodore, the CEO of EDC, "The Sanaga Basin is an important reservoir for agriculture when talking about the second generation agriculture, we have the surfaces to be extremely important and transversely as there are environmental issues."

For the boss of EDC, "the first priority is the production of energy, then there is the water supply and other water uses. That's why under the Lom Pangar project, we have received funding from the French Development Agency and the World Bank to improve integrated water resources management of the Sanaga. And it requires a number of panel discussions, "he said.

The catchment of the river Sanaga, the newspaper said, "contains 23% of water resources in the area of Cameroon, 70% of the country's hydroelectric potential. While covering an area of km² 129,000, a quarter of the area of national territory ".

This is what explains the need for the government to organize its operations.
