The Yaounde-Douala highway is in urgent need of repair after the road split in two at the entrance to the town of Edea.
According to an official source at the Ministry of Public Works, "the floor gave way due to the increased number of trucks at the weighing station."
The same phenomenon is observed at the toll station where the floor is partially degraded for the same reasons.
More worrying, "tonneau cases are legion in this place," said an authority in the city.
In general, the Douala-Yaoundé highway badly has its sections, particularly the Edea-Pouma is suffering from bad roads conditions.
First at Mapoubi in the district of Ngwei, where one of the two metal nozzles (concrete alternative) collapsed, a zone of the embankment slipped, creating a sagging floor at KP 11+ 800. The same thing happened a few meters further to the PK12 + 700 point.
The consequence of this situation is that it has hindered the free movements of vehicles thereby causing long traffic hours. Not far away, a vehicle which was involved in an accident has been abandoned and is gradually buried by weeds.
The Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Djoumessi Nganou, had the opportunity to see the extent of damage yesterday during a raid on the ground.
To repair the bad road conditions, he made an announcement to interested companies specializing in construction and design offices.
Such entities were submit proposals to repair later that day at 12 o'clock. For Yaounde-Douala highway is "a pronounced prevalence economic road that serves the Central African subregion. This is an extremely important section of the Douala-Ndjamena corridor, Douala-Bangui," the Ministry of Public Works said.
So we have to very quickly, bring the solution to this degradation. The technical and business teams solicited will allow the Minister to proceed with the upgrading of this highway, at least in regard to highly degraded areas.
"This will be done before the end of the year," announced Emmanuel Djoumessi Nganou.
"Once the work starts, tracing a bypass has been planned at the old national road to allow traffic for the duration of the repairs," he added.
