400,000 pints of blood needed annually in Cameroon

The percentage of blood transfusion in Cameroon has stepped forward to 50 even though far more below the targeted amount which is 400,000 pints.

The revelation was made by the Minister of Public Health Andre Mama Fouda during an educative talk organized at the Cameroon Red Cross Yaounde as part commemorative activities marking the World Blood Donor Day celebrated on June 14, 2016 under the theme: “Blood: a Universal al link.”

In his address, the Minister congratulated blood donors for their priceless sacrifices made to improve the amount of blood pints in the blood bank.

The number of blood pints in Cameroon increased from 49,000 in 2014 to 73,000 in 2015, even though still below the expected target which is 400,000 pints.

Blood donors were also encouraged to maintain their systems from any contamination so to always be at the disposal of patients.

According to the 2015 health reports, the following hospitals benefited thousands of blood pints from the National Blood Transfusion programme:

- Yaounde General Hospital-17076 pints
- Yaounde Central Hospital-12237
- Douala Laquintinie- 5329
- Douala General Hospital 4364


The Minister also announced the creation of a Regional Blood Transfusion Centre in Yaounde so to improve on the annual percentage of blood pints in the country. The project is being financed by the Islamic Bank.
