Afanoyoa holiday camp launched

The fifth edition of the holiday camp dubbed ‘Afanoyoa loisirs-vacances’ kicked off recently in Afaoyoa, a neighbourhood situated in the outskirts of Yaounde, with a march and football encounter.

The holiday camp to run from June 22 to August 24, will comprise sporting, cultural and educational activities.

To jump start activities on Sunday, a march took place from the Ahala junction to the Catholic Mission playground in Afanoyoa where the football match was to take place with over 100 people participating.

Addressing the public before the kick-off to the football game, His Majesty Etoundi Atanga Firmin said the holiday camp was organised by a group of councillors from the Yaounde III council.

Their intention, he said, was to occupy youths during the holiday period since as the saying goes; an idle mind is a devil’s workshop. The encounter that ensued pitted the ‘Association Sportive la Difference, ASDIF, against a veteran football club from the same locality.

The Veterans opened scores early into the game but were later caught up by ASDIF who went on to win the encounter 4-2.

During the camp there will be educational talks, seminars and conferences on certain social ills affecting the youth such as HIV/AIDs prevalence, combating drug addiction, teenage pregnancy and illness such as malaria.

According to one of the organizers, Modo Mbeng Jules, there will also be cultural activities as a means of sustaining the culture of the people threatened by the expansion of Yaounde city and the influence of foreign cultures.
