Alpha Condé ready for challenging term

Guinea’s National Independent Electoral Commission on Saturday, October 17, 2015 declared outgoing President, Alpha Condé, winner of October 11, 2015 presidential election scoring 57.85 per cent of the votes cast, representing an absolute majority.

The ceremony in the capital, Conakry was boycotted by the opposition that had earlier said they would reject election results. The results are still temporal pending the official proclamation by the country’s Constitutional Court.

Bakary Fofana, Chairperson of the electoral commission said in the temporary results, incumbent Alpha Condé had 2 285827 of the votes cast representing 57.85 per cent, while his main challenger, the opposition candidate, Cellou Dalein Diallo had 1 243 362 votes cast scoring 31.44 per cent.

He cited Article 32 of the Constitution to confirm Alpha Condé’s victory in the first round when he said, a candidate who obtains an absolute majority of the votes cast is elected, while waiting for the final proclamation by the Constitutional Court, RFI reported.

Alpha Condé’s clear victory in the first round of the presidential race in which seven opposition candidates also participate, makes him to be the country’s president for the next five years, and it will be his second consecutive term of office.

Before the Constitutional Court officially proclaims the final results, Alpha Conde should already be reflecting on the way forward in striking political reconciliation, ensuring peace and stability and forging ahead economic development.

This is because his main challenger, Cellou Dalein Diallo denounced the vote as fraudulent, withdrew from the electoral process and said, “I will invite the other candidates and all the citizens who are the real victims of this electoral hold-up to organise, conforming to the law, peaceful demonstrations to express our disapproval of this situation," BBC quoted.

The law gives candidates eight days to file complaints before the Constitutional Court validates the results. Cellou Dalein has declared that he will not appeal to the court.
