Architecture school launches neighbourhood rehabilitation plan

The project for cleaning up neighbourhoods in towns kicked off in Tsinga, Yaounde recently.

Improving the environment in the town is a major priority of the Higher Specialised School of Architecture Cameroon (ESSACA). It is in this light that the project called Initiation Workshop in Restructuring and Cleaning up of Existing Neighbourhoods (AIRA-qua) kicked off at the Tsinga neighbourhood in the Yaounde II Subdivision on April 1, 2015.

Speaking at the occasion, Mayor Luc Assamba of the Yaounde II Subdivision said the gesture is timely as it will help improve the living conditions of the people in the Yaounde II municipality.

He called on the public to get involved in the clean-up campaign and to respect the environment in order to ensure good healthy environment for the good of all. The project “AIRA- Quartiers Aléatiores” is an initiative of the Specialised School of Architecture Cameroon in partnership with the Yaounde II Council.

The project consists of rehabilitating an existing neighbourhood. The project is part of the practical of the students of ESSACA after completing the theoretical part of work. AIRA is a workshop which treats the rehabilitation and cleaning up of neighbourhoods in towns in Africa.

The corridor that is undergoing rehabilitation is from the Borne Fontaine Tsinga and extends to the Polish Consulate in the Bastos neighbourhood; a distance of about 500sqm. During the rehabilitation works, the students will carry out different activities such as repairing of bridges, gutters, playgrounds and rehabilitation of bore holes in the locality.

The objective is to sensitise the students on the observation of their environment and its realities, making them adapt and familiarise with the environment and to put their profession at the service of the public and associate the public in the restructuring and preservation of their neighbourhoods among others.

The exercise takes place on Wednesdays and will last for one month. At the end of the exercise a book containing a presentation of the project and its objectives will be published for future use.
