Cameroon’s Armed Forces once more came out stronger in clashes with terrorists from Nigeria.

Cameroon’s Armed Forces protecting the inviolability of frontiers in the Far North Region are increasingly implementing the best strategies to repel repeated attacks from assailants claiming to belong to the Nigeria-based Boko Haram sect.

A five-hour battle that ensued on January 12, 2015 after hundreds of Boko Haram assailants undertook a surprise attack on a military camp in Kolofata in the Mayo Sava Division, ended with Cameroon’s Armed Forces killing over 143 of them – the highest so far since the war began. A good portion of the enemies’ precious military gear was also reportedly destroyed, while some were seized.

According to a press release by the Minister of Communication, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, published same day, this was the heaviest casualty suffered by Boko Haram since it started its attacks against Cameroon. The Kolofata attack, which was launched under the cover of the foggy atmospheric conditions prevailing in the Far North Region, demonstrates that Boko Haram is changing tactics, yet meeting with stiff resistance from Cameroonian military.

Last December 28, 2014, a gang of over 1,000 armed assailants attacked the military camp in the Achigachia locality, causing Cameroon’s military stationed there to retreat. The air bombardments authorised by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Paul Biya, sent the assailants fleeing back across the border, leaving many dead.

Just a day before, the Cameroonian army had repelled attacks in several localities. Seven members of the terrorist group were identified in the Makary locality and arrested. Responding to another attack, the Armed Forces besieged the enemy’s base in Shogori, destroying two assault pick-up vehicles and killing 34 members of the terrorist group. Later in an ambush set by the enemy not far away from the locality of Waza, the Armed Forces countered, killing seven assailants and recording one dead and three soldiers wounded.

Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary has in his recent press releases not only commended the bravery of Cameroonian soldiers on behalf of government, but also urged the public to remain vigilant and continue to support, by all means, the soldiers protecting the inviolability of the territory and preserving lives.
