Drivers plying the Kumbo-Nkambe road have resumed work after a sit down strike to protest against constant harassment by police stationed at Nkar between, Kumbo and Ndu.
The Nkar Routiere control post was also burnt down by unknown individuals during the standoff between the drivers and the routieres.
It took the intervention of Bui SDO, Nzeke Theophile in a crisis meeting with the drivers, security officials and senior police officials from Yaoundé on Tuesday October 18, 2014, to calm tempers. He called on them to acquire legal documents and advised them to pay, collect and sign their documents to avoid any future problems.
The hundreds of drivers who turn out for the meeting complained of constant extortion by element of the police who confiscate and misplace their documents. The drivers led by the divisional president of the Drivers Union, Tata Donald questioned why the drivers are complaining only of the police on that stretch of road and called for them to be taken off the road.
The police on their part claimed that most of the documents used by the drivers were fake, especially their insurance policies, road worthiness certificate and some of their vehicle registration certificate.
The sit down strike by the drivers caused untold suffering to passengers on that stretch of road who had to result to using commercial bikes popularly known as ‘achaba’
