British Investment Fund, Actis which recently took over AES-Sonel, the concessionary of the public service in charge of the generation, transmission, distribution and marketing of electricity in Cameroon, is considering investing more than CFA 170 billion francs to improve energy supply in the country over a four-year period (2014-2018).
This program which aims to improve the production of electricity includes, among other projects, the construction of a 50 MW generating power station in Douala to guard against the expected impact of works relating to the rehabilitation of the Songloulou hydropower plant in the coastline, with a production capacity of 385 MW.
This is seen as a development plan estimated at an average of CFA 35 billion francs per year over the next five years. The investment involves all segments of the company’s activities, from production to distribution, including transporting energy, managing transport network as well as business activities.
The project relating to distribution improvement receives major investment resources, with a budget amounting to CFA 75 billion francs. With this five-year investment program, CFA 30 billion francs will be allocated toward the improvement of the company’s business, while CFA 18 billion francs will be invested for electricity transmission.
