Cameroon media urged to uphold social responsibility

Cameroon media professionals have been praised for their social responsible reporting especially on the fight against Boko Haram attacks in the Far North Region.

They were congratulated last January 23 at the esplanade of the Ministry of Communication in Yaoundé by Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, as he received New Year Wishes from the communication family in Cameroon.

Announcing reforms and measures that will better the communication landscape in the country, Minister Issa Tchiroma who doubles as government Spokesman said government will this year improve upon its communication thereby requiring improvement in public media organs such as Cameroon Radio Television, CRTV and Cameroon Tribune.

He noted with satisfaction the current restructuring of CRTV to meet up with the challenge of the digital switchover announced for this year. He added that apart from CRTV and Cameroon Tribune, the National Printing Press will equally be revamped.

Minister Tchiroma announced that a national online news agency will enter its experimental phase this year and that the national press card commission which had gone into coma will come back to life through the resumption of its operation in this 2015.

The Communication boss, reassured media professionals of the private sector that studies are being finalized for the putting in place of a special grant of the President of the Republic to take care of the private media in Cameroon.

He added that the law on advertisement will be revised to offer more growth opportunities for the private press. Minister Tchiroma reiterated his determination to see that the private press which is government’s key development partner is not relegated to the background as Cameroon strives for emergence come 2035.
