Cameroon names new Supreme Court president

President of the Supreme Court of Cameroon, Alexis Dipanda Mouelle, age 79 and in office for a quarter century, has been replaced by Sone Mekobe, under a decree published on Thursday.

The move came just hours after magistracy Supreme Council meeting which also conducted review of magistrates’ disciplinary records, senior justice auditors’ integration in the body, headquarter judges’ registration in the advancement board and their promotion to rank as well as appointments.

Being Magistrate outside the hierarchy, Alexis Dipanda Mouelle became known during the 11 October 1992 presidential election dispute when he declared the incumbent Head of State, Paul Biya, the winner despite several irregularities Having reached the age limit, his tenure had nevertheless been extended twice since 2008 by presidential decree.
