Cameroon places travel ban on Nigeria

In a bid to prevent the deadly Ebola virus from finding its way into the country, Cameroon has placed a travel ban on Nigeria, Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. These are the countries in Africa presently affected by the scourge of the Ebola Virus Disease.

This announcement was made yesterday by Cameroon’s transport minister, Hon. Bello Bouba Maigari.

A circular sent by the minister to not just airlines but sea, river and land transport officials too said the decision to effect the ban was taken in Yaoundé after a meeting between the Cameroonian government and concerned travel companies. The meeting was jointly chaired by Maigari and the Minister of Health, Hon. André Mama Fouda.

It said major concerns are of preventive measures to be taken in the fight against the Ebola virus which has already caused the death of about 1500 people across West Africa.

Other measures, the circular added, include the strengthening of surveillance in airports, harbours and other entry points into Cameroon, stressing that no case of Ebola has so far been detected in the country.
