Cameroon poised to improve rural electrification

The Rural Electrification Agency (AER) has disclosed a plan to improve energy supply in rural Cameroon by building mini-hydroelectric power plants across the country.

For its first phase, AER will inaugurate the construction of three hydroelectric power plants of 15 megawatts capacity (5 MW each).

The power plants would be built in Messock, Lomié and Messamena in the Eastern Region of the country.

On this occasion, the government has launched an international tender to preselect consultancy firms to participate in the restricted call to conduct pre-feasibility studies to build the three mini-hydroelectric power plants in some localities of Cameroon.

Cameroon’s rural electrification rate is officially around 18 percent.
