Condom Crossroads remain popular over 20 years

Prostitution is a flourishing business in Cameroon and sadly many students with a lack of income turn to prostitution to pay for their rent, studies, and fashionable clothes.

Condoms Crossroads is an infamous place located in the vicinity of the University of Yaoundé I, between Cradat and Bonamoussadi. Its name and reputation has stuck from the 1990’s when students walking to school along the dirt road would discover used condoms from the night before and not much has changed since then.

During the day, it is the atmosphere of an ordinary corner. The sound of motorcycles, taxis and horn punctuate life with the comings and goings of students who follow the path to get to the classroom.

As night falls, the scene changes. Students invade the place in skimpy outfits to engage in the oldest profession in the world. Prices here range from 300 CFA francs and above according to the requirement of the customer.

It is a known destination of taxi drivers. Mboumsong Isidore, a former student of the University of Yaoundé I, and now a teacher at the school, says: "The name Condom Crossroads, which still holds today, originated between 1993 to 1994. But you will not find more students of our time."
