Drivers lag in paying vehicle taxes

The Director General of taxes last Friday, 2nd January 2014 announced the availability of stamp duties, fiscal stamps and widescreen licenses at the different tax collection units nationwide.

The release also specified the prices tag of each of the different categories of taxes which include;

Fiscal stamps from 1000CFA francs to 50 000 CFA francs Windscreen licenses of 2500CFA francs for motorcycles 15000 CFA francs for vehicles of 1 to 7 horse powers 25 000 CFA francs for 8 – 10 horse power vehicles 50 000 CFA Francs for 11 – 15 horse powers 100 000 CFA francs for those more than 15 horse power

Although the announcement stated that the taxes were at the disposal of cash counters nationwide; the activities at payment centres in Yaounde were slow this Monday morning.

Most vehicle owners say they spent a lot of money during the end of year feasts and are waiting for January salaries, a few taxi drivers and vehicle owners were however spotted trooping in to pay their taxes.

Some hinted that they simply want to avoid police aggression while others understand the importance of paying their taxes.

Atangana Joseph, a township taxi driver in Yaounde whom we met at the Senior Divisional officer in Yaounde said it is a culture for him to renew all his vehicle documents at the beginning of the year in other to avoid any embarrassments.

Next door at the stamp duty office several young people were seen obtaining the 1000 CFA francs fiscal stamp in order to compile documents for the different competitive entrance examinations into the public service.
