Eastern region hosts over 125,000 CAR refugees

The head of the UNHCR Sub-Office in Bertoua, Joseph Zapater, had a chat with the press last Tuesday. During the discussion, it came to light that the new Central African refugees, who have moved in since January 2014 were 125, 121 as at the end of the month of July.

After July, there were lesser numbers moving into this part of the country. These people in distress are living in over 92 villages in the border areas with the Central African Republic, their country of origin.

The bulk of the workforce is in the eastern region, precisely in Gado-Badzere sites with 18, 538 refugees, Lolo (10,272), Mbilé (8,697),) Timangolo(6,171, Gbiti (more than 5000), without forgetting the localities of Toktoyo, Kette, Bela, Libongo with a total of 45, 987 Central African refugees registered in the East.

The Adamawa, ranked in terms of importance to these people in distress, as it hosts about 15,645 refugees, with interesting numbers in Borgop and Ngaoui. The third region is the North which recognised in its various border villages 4,218 refugees.

The head of UNHCR Sub-Office in Bertoua, Josep Zapater, précised that 108,117 refugees were already registered in mid-October and that 17,004 of them are being recorded. When one adds the records of 2004 and 2007, then we can count over 150,000 Central African refugees living in peace in 308 villages in Cameroon.
