Electricity Association Calls for Nationalisation

A local association, Energy Consumers Associations Network (ECAN), has called on the State of Cameroon to renationalise the power utility corporation, Sonel, which until date has been run by the American energy Group, AES.

The President of the association, Charles Ngah Nforgang, made the call in Akwa-Douala on January 22 following the imminent official takeover of Sonel by the British group, ACTIS. According to the association's executive, the energy sector should be sovereign as Cameroon disposes the expertise and the human resources needed in the energy sector.

On the other hand, the association urges ACTIS to take into consideration the concerns of energy users and contribute to improving provision of electrical energy in the country. Nforgang said they are preparing a memorandum to submit to ACTIS, to that effect. It was on December 17, 2013 that ACTIS was announced to officially take over from AES-Sonel.

ECAN's main objectives are to defend the rights and protect the economic and social interests of energy consumers. It works to see to it that every Cameroonian or persons living in Cameroon enjoy continuous and steady quality energy services.
