Eta-Bisong eyeing Bar presidency again!

Barrister Eta-Bisong Jr., erstwhile president of the Cameroon Bar has said he did like to become Bar President again and that he has already deposited his files in Yaoundé ahead of the Bar Council imminent elections.

Eta-Bisong indicated his interest to regain the position of Bar President, understanding that he will be challenging incumbent Sama Francis Asanga for the Presidency.

Eta said his immediate goal now is to gain a place among the 15 members of the Bar Council, from whom the next Bar President will be chosen.

“I can’t be a candidate for the Bar Presidency without first of all being a member of the Bar Council. So, I’ll tell you that I am a candidate for the Cameroon Bar Council elections for now. That is how far I want to go. But if the people want me to go further than that, that’s how it’s going to be."

Eta said his legal resume – over three decades of practice, a member of the Bar Council for over two decades makes him believe he still has a lot to offer.

“I have been in practice for 33 years now, 20 of these years have been spent at the Bar Council and I think no one else has that record,” he said.

Eta said it is unheard of that a past Bar President is voted into the Bar Council, pointing out that his popularity is instead growing by the day. It is this popularity that he banks on to regain the office of Bar President after a short while in the cold.

If the plans materialise, then he will have to face a stiff challenge from incumbent Bar President, Sama Francis and Barrister Arlette Ngoulla Fotso.

Ngoulla is gunning for the Batonnier job, campagning that her goal will be to build a united bar and make history.

Aspirants for the Bar Council elections have until December 5 to submit their applications.

Veteran Lawyer, Sama Francis Asanga, was elected on August 14, 2012. He took over from Eta Bisong. Eta’s two-year mandate was prolonged, until an in- house conflict that led to the prolongation was resolved in a meeting chaired by peace crusader Ntumfor Barrister Nico Halle.

The Buea-based Lawyer was elected President of the Cameroon Bar Council November 9, 2008 during the General Assembly, but he added close to two years on his two-year mandate.

The next Bar election is billed for January 31, 2015.
