Forestry experts drilled on satellite observation of forests

The Minister of the Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development Hele Pierre has ended a four-day workshop in Yaounde on the observation of tropical forests through satellites.

During the workshop, close to 150 experts and researchers were exploring satellite images to enhance the fight against forest degradation and deforestation.

The experts noted that with the satellite images, they will be able to analyse the forests over the years and measure the extent of deforestation, while identifying its causes.

Such findings through satellite monitoring, the experts add, will aid policy makers in developing effective strategies to stop forest destruction.

This workshop follows a few years after France decided to freely furnish Central and West African countries with high resolution satellite images and train forestry staff on how to exploit them.
