French Amb. advises citizens to be vigilant after fuel price increase

Making reference to the riots that occurred in 2008, the Ambassador of France to Cameroon has warned his countrymen to be careful of their movements following the announcement of rising fuel prices.

He advised that they limit their movements and be particularly vigilant when travelling in vehicles; he urged them to keep their windows closed and doors locked.

In a circular note the ambassador writes, "I also recommend that you refrain from making public comments with strangers on the price increases." It must be emphasized, France does not hold a great deal of confidence in Cameroon and Cameroonians and this is reflected in the recommendations that can be found on French sites for people thinking of moving abroad.

"The attention of French nationals is drawn to the possible risks incurred as a result of contacts made by electronic mail (Internet) or post, with some Cameroonian nationals who seek to meet to obtain various benefits from their partner (marriage, acquisition of a foreign nationality, recognition of natural children or adultery), sometimes using coercive methods. Networks facilitate marriages of convenience for the sole purpose of circumventing the rules on visas."

Regarding financial risks, "The utmost caution is recommended in financial matters. On business partnerships be well informed in advance, especially with our consulates and economic missions. Avoid using credit cards, which are generally not accepted except by airlines and international hotel chains.

Do not draw checks on a bank based out of Cameroon and avoid the use of regular mail for sending or receiving bank mail."

It has also been noted that the number of French citizens living in Cameroon have drastically reduced. In 1995, there were 6,385 French living in Cameroon, against 6,024 as of 2004.
