Government begins security perimeter at Lake Nyos

After the establishment of degassing columns and the construction of a dam at the Lake, the Government begins the security perimeter, 28 years after the disaster.

August 21, 2014 marked the 28th anniversary of the Lake Nyos disaster in the Northwest region of Cameroon. For the occasion, the Cameroonian Government through the Ministry of Territorial Administration and decentralization, informs all that it had launched in March 2008, with the support of the United Nations Programme for development (UNDP), a national program of security and rehabilitation of Lake Nyos.

August 21, 2014 was an opportunity for the Minister of Territorial Administration and decentralization, René Sadi, to present the balance sheet of this program and Outlook.

This project relates to the construction of a natural dam, in order to curb the risk of flooding; the development of a route of access to the Lake and the construction and implementation of two additional columns to accelerate the degassing of the gas.

Recently, the Government gave aid to the survivors. August 22, 2014 will mark the launch of the materialization of the security around the Lake perimeter.

Cameroon has initiated actions to prevent the occurrence of disasters in this area. Since then, degassing operations have been implemented under the coordination of the Institute of geological and mining research (IRGM).
