Government to improve conditions of the disabled

The predicaments of the disabled persons were discussed on Wednesday, 26th November during the 23rd Edition marking the International Day of the Disabled Person.

The day was celebrated in Yaounde under the auspices of the Minister of Social Affairs, Catherine Bakang Mbock.

During this event, Mrs Catherine promised more specialized structures to meet the needs of the disabled persons given that more than 10,000 people are living with disabilities.

It was also revealed that disabled persons are often being subjected to discrimination and marginalisation, they do not always benefit from appropriate education and professional training in the job market.

According to the Minister of Social Affairs this negative tendency could be reversed if they are employed.

The Minister also emphasised the need of face-lifting the use of Information and communication technology among the disabled. According to her, it could facilitate the emergence of economic activities in favour of disabled persons. "This might tend to reduce poverty, enhance quality education, good environment health and make them independent" she said.

The Ministry will ensure the participation of key actors like local authorities and civil society organisations in action relating to the inclusion of persons with disabilities. “Cameroon cannot talk of Sustainable Development without taking into consideration persons living with disabilities especially in the desire to exploit new technologies.

The Government has promise to improve on the scrapes of the disabled by providing specialised structures to carter for them” she noted.

The declaration has conveyed hope to many victims who expressed their joy with the decision.
