Members of the Network of Traditional Rulers for Conservation and Protection of Biodiversity and Ecosystems (ReCTrad) of the Congo Basin have met with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril to discuss ways of protecting forests in Cameroon.
During the meeting on Saturday 22nd November 2014, Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril who is also the traditional ruler of Mada in Mayo Sava Division of the Far North Region was receptive to the concerns raised.
Hon Cavaye Yeguie pledged that the National Assembly shall propose effective laws to stop deforestation and encourage tree-planting to improve the people’s livelihood.
The House Speaker also decried the continuous bad habits that lead to deforestation and climate change with subsequent limited rainfall, food shortage and poverty.
In perspective, the National Assembly Speaker indicated that the assembly shall extend the tree-planting crusade to the South region.
The National Coordinator of ReCTrad, His Majesty Nfor Tanyi Robinson of Tinto-Mbu in the South West region applauded the recent reforms in the forestry, land and mining sectors.
At the close of the day, the traditional rulers called on government to revise the 1994 Forestry Law and rethink the forty-year old Mining Law.
