Inter-Parliamentary Union S.G visits Senate

Cameroon Senate President, Marcel Niat Njifenji has received the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Martin Chungong in audience.

The Cameroonian-born IPU Secretary General visited the Senate president on 7th September 2014, a day after the official opening of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference.

During the dialogue, the IPU SG expressed gratitude to the senate and parliament of Cameroon, for their support during his campaign to be elected as head of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Mr. Martin Chungong and Senate President, Niat Njifenji also discussed democracy and the role of the Bicameral Parliament in Cameroon. With the existence of such a parliamentary system, the IPU Secretary General called on the two chambers to work together in unity.

Since the creation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1889, Martin Chungong is its eighth Secretary General and first non-European to be scribe of the Union.

He was elected during the 130th IPU Assembly in Geneva to replace Anders B. Johnsson of Sweden whose mandate ended in June 2014.
