An inter-ministerial meeting extended to the administrative authorities and social partners was held on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at the Ministry of transport in Yaoundé to decision on how to manage the movement of heavy duty trucks in cities.
Now, companies specialized in Transport will systematically be controlled by officials of the Ministry of transport. The announcement was made by Robert Nkili, head of the Department at the end of a meeting on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. "We shall control these companies involved in transport, transit. We will check for those who have approved licenses. We will also make sure that the measures put in place for breweries, Hysacam, sand carriers are duly followed," said Robert Nkili.
The basis for this meeting at Yaoundé is to regulate the circulation of heavy goods vehicles in cities.
The meeting was held between the Minister of transport, the Minister of Territorial Administration and decentralization, the Minister of trade, the Minister of finance, the General delegate, national security, the Governors of Regions, delegates from the Government to the urban communities of Douala and Yaoundé, as well as social partners.
Robert Nkili, Minister attributed most of the traffic accidents to the negligence of heavy duty trucks on the road. Records revealed that, from January to July 2014, 154 fatalities were caused by big trucks which have been registered to operate on the road.
Suggestions were made on how to limit accidents, evaluate existing parking lots, establish transport chains, enforce the system of rest points for drivers.
In the course of the discussion, the Minister of transport reminded them of his circular letter dated 16th October regulating traffic for big carriers in urban centres indicating that it was not intended to paralyze economic activity but to bring a particular response to this form of "delinquency".
This measure had been strongly criticized by carriers and economists forcing the Mintransport to clarify its decision. Thus Robert Nkili finally allowed trucks carrying sand, gasoline, goods to circulate at any time provided that they limit their speed to 40 km / hour in the cities.
