International Democracy Day : legislative arm cautions youth to be more proactive

The seven edition of the International Democracy Day has been commemorated at the National Assembly under the theme”Engaging Youths on Democracy.”

During the event, a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Honourable Emah Etoundi challenged the youth present at the national assembly to consolidate values of good governance essential to a growing democracy.

House Speaker Cavaye Yeguie Djibril and Vice President of the National Assembly, Honorable Theophile Baoro both insisted the need for the Cameroonian youth join in the consolidation of democratic institutions like the National Youth Council and National Civic Service Agency for Participation and Development.

According to the President of the National Youth Council, Jean Mark Afesy Mbafor, the democracy in Cameroon has taken a political connotation, excluding the youths.

Jean Mark Afesy Mbafor was however encouraged by the fact that government has created institutions through which the youth have the upper hand in terms of decisions and can consequently contribute to the democratic process in Cameroon.

The Seventh edition of the International Democracy Day was celebrated in the presence of members of Inter-Parliamentary Union, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Diplomatic Corps, Senators, Members of Parliament and Youths from Universities, Higher learning Institutions and Civil Society organisations.
