Iran President congratulates Cameroon on National Day

The President of Iran Hassan Rouhani congratulated the President of the Republic of Cameroon Paul Biya, the country's people and government on their National Day on Wednesday May, 20.

"I hope that economic, cultural and political relations between Iran and the Republic of Cameroon will further expand," read President's message.

Rouhani wished Cameroon’s president success and prosperity for the people and government.

Cameroon National Day is celebrated on May 20. On the 20th of May 1972, in a national referendum, Cameroonians voted for a unitary state as opposed to the existing federal state.

The United Nations Trust Territory known as French Cameroun achieved independence from France on 1 January 1960, and British Southern Cameroon changed status from a Trusteeship under British administration to a federated state within Cameroon on 1 October 1961.

The government chose May 20, as Cameroon's National Day to commemorate President Ahmadou Ahidjo's abolishment of the federal system of government in favor of a unitary country in 1972.
