Joe Etonde laid to rest

Born in 1955, the musician, poet and painter died in Douala last April 19 in Deido.

The artistic family in the Littoral in particular, Cameroon and the international community at large had a rather tight schedule over the weekend.

Though reputed for putting smiles on faces during their performance mostly on Fridays and Saturdays, this time around their “song” was underlined by a sad note. They turned out in their numbers to pay last homage to their friend and colleague, Joe Etonde, who passed on to glory on April 19 in Douala.

The Makossa musician, poet and painter would forever be remembered for his endless strides towards boosting the image of Makossa rhythms both at home and abroad. Author of five musical albums and several painting exhibitions, the artiste was preparing the release of another album by the end of this year, explained his colleagues.

Friday April 9 morning was marked by the removal of his corps from the Military Hospital Mortuary in Bonanjo; after which a church service ensued. His mortal remains were laid for a brief moment at his residence in Deido, before being carried to College Alfred Saker for the wake keeping exercise.

This period was marked a live musical performance by other musicians, in memory of the decease. Apart from their personal songs, the artiste’s songs were equally played to celebrate his life and works. The following day Saturday 10, as early as 6am, the mourners hit the road to Bessounkan (Abo North), in the Moungo Division of the Littoral Region. Joe Etonde leaves behind a widow, children and grandchildren, alongside the artistic family and sympathisers to mourn him.
