News of the death of popular and retired footballer, Joseph Ewunkem, has gripped the Buea public in total consternation. The ace footballer passed on in the early hours of 10 July at the Mount Mary hospital in Buea. He had been ailing for over six months. Until his death, Ewunkem was treasurer of the South West FECAFOOT.
An eye witness account of his close friend, Nana Walter Wilson, spoke of a resourceful Ewunkem whose football talent took him to South Korea in 1975 to defend the colours of the Cameroon military football team on a World Cup expedition. Ewunkem had played for the Buea-based Prisons Club from 1968 to 1980.
In his professional life Ewunkem, an ex-student of Sasse College Buea, was a Community Development staff having studied at the pan-African Institute for West Africa (PAID-WA) and later in Britain. He retired from football in 1980 and from the Ministry of Agriculture a decade ago. May his soul rest in perfect peace!
