More than 2 billion FCFA embezzled public funds recovered

Cameroon Treasury regained more than CFAF 2.1 billion in 2014 for the reimbursement by managers convicted for embezzlement of public funds, according to a report just released by the Department of Justice.

This figure shows a sharp increase in refunds, which were about 253.9 million CFA FRANCS in 2013.

The principle of the return to this body the funds embezzled was established with the creation of the special Criminal Court (CHT), officially assumed office in October 2012 and in charge of economic crimes involving sums greater than or equal to 50 million CFA FRANCS.

One of its articles indeed stipulates that in case of return, the Prosecutor of the Republic may, with the approval of the Minister in charge of Justice, stop prosecution against an accused, a provision that has almost never been applied despite the multiple reported reimbursements.
