Over 300 medical students of Yaounde I University matriculate

Some 307 new students of the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaounde I, have been enjoined to exercise strict self-discipline in order to succeed in their future careers. Of the number, 133 are for medicine, 75 for dental medicine, 25 for pharmacy, 57 in some 20 specialisation courses, and 17 resident trainees.

Speaking in the campus of the University on Friday, January 16, 2015, the Rector, Prof. Maurice Aurelien Sosso, enjoined the students to always endeavour to learn from their errors, adding that respect for ethics would always uplift them.

Addressing old students who were repeating, Prof. Sosso, said failure brings about a rude shock, but at the same time provides a rich experience for lesson-learning. Following recent reforms in medical training in the country, the Rector said the challenges were many. These include various national entrance examinations for medical, pharmaceutical and dental studies, and specialisation courses.

Prof. Sosso felicitated the management of the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences for the 100 per cent performance in the 2014 CAMES African promotion examination to professoral rank at which all eight candidates from the faculty succeeded.

In a bid to improve the working conditions of lecturers, he announced that more structures will be constructed and laboratory equipment provided. Moreover, 16 new assistant lecturers have been recruited. The event also saw the presentation of an inaugural lecture by Prof. Mouafo Tambo on acute intestinal problems in children.
