Paul Biya is best paid African president; $630,000 - Report

Paul Biya waves Paul Biya waves

A research conducted by Africa Review cited Paul Biya, President of Cameroon, as the best paid African president earning $630,000 yearly.

The research suggests that Cameroon's Head of State, who is placed at the top, earns 229 times what an average Cameroonian earns.

Paul Biya is followed by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, who earns 113 times what her average citizen earns.

The research which sought to analyse salaries of African leaders to ascertain what they tell about the relationship between those in power and the governed showed that only a few countries make public what they pay their leaders.

According to Africa Review, it decided to compare the leaders’ gross annual salaries with the Gross National Income of their countries – basically comparing the leader’s pay with what their nationals on average earn instead of rank of the leaders based on absolute figures.

Although Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud was 10th with his annual salary of $120,000 (Ksh12m), the country was excluded from the comparative study due to the lack of verifiable GNI per capita figures.

The best ten paid presidents are:

1. Paul Biya (Cameroon) - $630,000

2. King Mohammed (Morocco) - $480,000

3. Jacob Zuma (South Africa - $ 272,000

4. Jakaya Kikwete (Tanzania) - $192, 000

5. Abdelaziz Bouteflika (Algeria) - $168,000

6. Teodoro Mbasogo (Equatorial Guinea) – $150,000

7. Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya) - $ 132,000

8. Ikililou Dhoinine (Comoros) - $115,000

9. Denis Sassou Nguesso (Congo Republic) - $110,000

10. Hage Geingob (Namibia) – $100,000
