Population Bullies Central Police in Bamenda

The Bamenda Central Police station in Old Town was the centre of attraction last Tuesday June 18, 2013 as the population of the neighbourhood blocked the entrance.

They were demanding the release of two brothers, Haminou and Saminou, who were said to have been terrorising the population of Old Town neighbourhood. The elder brother, Haminou, was detained on June 16 for allegedly stabbing and killing 20 year-old Aryam Tse. The population blamed the police for always releasing the boys whenever they are caught and detained. They claimed that handing the boys to them will put an end to matters and bring peace to the Old Town neighbourhood. They came prepared to invade the police station, take the boys and put them to death.

Other services of the police were called upon to help bring order to the Old Town neighbourhood. On hand to calm the situation was the State Counsel of Mezam, James George Ngwene, accompanied by the SDO for Mezam, Felix Nguelle Nguelle, as well as the Delegate for Public Security, Emile Guesmou. The State Counsel called on the population to retire and come up with evidence for a case file to be established to enable justice to take its course. It took hours of negotiation for the population to retire.

At press time, the corpse of 20-year-old Aryam Tse who is alleged to have been murdered by Haminou, is at the Bamenda Regional Hospital mortuary while the two brothers, Haminou and Saminou, have been transferred to the Bamenda Central Prison to await trial.
