Residents in shock over Biyem Assi tragedy

More than 10 days after the tragedy of October 16, the people are still wondering the exact number of victims, measures to be taken to avoid the re-occurrence of such tragedies and the degree of involvement of the public authorities in such an occasion.

A week after the tragedy, residents in Biyem-Assi Yaoundé and its surroundings are still in a state of shock. For some, their fate is certain. They know that they have lost members of their families, and are mourning them already. Others are informed that their families have been involved in the tragedy, but feel fortunate to be alive.

Others remain in fear that the accident of October 16 could reoccur, "we are always expecting that we will hear bad news, especially for those who have not heard from their relatives after the accident. And especially for the fact that since the incident, we constantly smell bad odors in the district, this make them suspect that there are still bodies under the rubble” an inhabitant of the place said.

To clear all doubt and put the mind of inhabitants at ease, a search has been conducted in the area and neighbouring hospitals where the victims of the ghastly accident were conveyed. CHU hospital in Yaoundé, acknowledged having received two young people on Thursday evening. The first died on arrival and the second died shortly after admission.
