SDF scribe steps aside, calls for position to be elective

Professor Mrs. Elisabeth Tamanjong, Secretary General of Cameroon’s leading opposition party, the SDF has step down from her position citing as reason that her “ascension to the position should be by elections and not appointment” But she pledged to remain a militant of the party.

Meeting in Bamenda over the weekend, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party accepted her resignation. Prof. Mrs. Tamanjong became SDF Secretary General in 2006 after the resignation of Prof. Tazoache Asonganyi.

Some militants of the party have said clearly their differences with the party chairman on several issues is the likely cause of her resignation. It’s not exactly clear who will step into her shoes or whether the party will adopt her proposals for the position to be elective. What is clear now is that per the party’s present constitution, party chair, Ni John Fru Ndi has the prerogative to appoint her successor.

NEC also used the Bamenda meeting to express its stand against Boko Haram, calling for an inclusive all national consultation forum on how to neutralize the group involving all public opinion leaders in the country to be involved.

NEC also strongly condemned the sectarian killings by the group and also supported the international cooperation to combat the terrorist group.

The SDF further called for national solidarity with the affected population of the Far North Region and for government to do all in assisting all displaced Cameroonians in the affected area.
