SW Civic Education Stakeholders Commissioned

Bernard Okalai Bilai spoke to the installed members of the Regional committee on Civic Education and National Integration.

Some 34 members have been installed as the Regional Committee on Civic Education and National Integration for the South West Region. The ceremony took place at the new Buea Council conference room on September 12.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Governor who doubles as the president of the committee on Civic Education and National Integration stated the challenges and prospects for Cameroon.

Okalai Bilai said observing the National Anthem in Cameroon now has degenerated so badly these days that some people are reluctant to stand up when the anthem is being sung. He said dressing in public these days by the youths and some adults is a disgrace to the community. He added that they even disrespect the elders and question their authority. These have let to the collapse of social values.

The Governor said even the religious leaders have failed in promoting self growth for the Christians and some are an embarrassment to their church members.

The representative from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Physical Education, Nde Chi Henry in a bid to through light on the resolutions of the International Colloquium on Civic Education and National Integration that held in Yaounde, said it was launched under the theme; A Responsible Citizen for an Exemplary Cameroon, with the objective to eradicate non civic behaviour in social explosion in the youths. He added that to be a responsible citizen is to perform Civic tasks. Civic responsibility he said is executed through volunteerism and obedience to authority and the law that governs the nation.

Some non civic responsibilities which should be denounced were said to be, non respect of national symbols, indecent behaviour, indecent dressing, late coming, vandalism, sexual and physical abuse, falsification of results among others.

Apart from the youth Affairs which champions this cause, there is also the Ministries of Basic and Secondary education, Ministry of Women Empowerment and the Family and the Ministry of Higher Education.

Other members installed in the South West region include, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea was installed as Vice President, the Regional Delegate of Youth Affairs as the rapporteur. Some of the members includes, Senator Mbella Moki Charles, Nfor Tabetando, president of the South West court, Mayor of Buea Council, Government Delegate to the Limbe Urban Council, Delegates of Basic and Secondary education, among others.
