Seminar on greenhouse gases in aviation ends

Participants turn out to see how they can protect the environment by producing less gas in air transport.

The workshop that was a joint initiative of the African Civil Aviation Commission (Cafac) and the Organization of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) was aim at seeking solutions from experts to see how this problem can be solved.

Participants at the workshop came from various African countries seeking solutions for current and future trends of noise emissions from aircraft engines.

According to ICAO, studies in the field of civil aviation have shown that the entire air transport contributes to the pollution of the atmosphere at 5%.

These same studies have shown, moreover, with the issuance of 2% carbon dioxide globally, aviation contributes to global warming. These rates, although significant, pushed ICAO since 1968 to fight a battle to protect the environment.

For their part, the Civil Aviation Authority, officials welcome the opportunity offered to their staff, to the extent that Cameroon now has four international airports and 12 secondary airports.

"We are trying to find a balance between the development of air transport and the protection of nature.

ICAO should give us assistance in the development of our plan, so we have the tools and information needed to reduce the effects of these gases on the environment in the field of aeronautics "said Mamadou Allabira, Deputy Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority.

It is practical to provide focal points for information on the development and updating of the action plan states, with emphasis on data collection and mitigation.

According Chaouki Mustapha, an environmental expert with ICAO, the standards implemented will help reduce the noise made by airplanes, pollution by airlines.

Also, aircrafts should use alternative fuels to reduce environmental pollution and the government should ban construction near airports.
