Senate - Saki Lamine Replaces Abba Boukar

Saki Lamine who was before yesterday, March 31, 2014 the alternate Senator to Abba Boukar who is now Mayor of Mora in the Far North Region, is now the new Senator. The President of the Senate, Marcel Niat Njifenji during a plenary sitting of the House, yesterday handed the attributes and insignia to Saki Lamine investing her with the power of Senator. This was in the presence of the Vice Prime Minister, Minister Delegate at the Presidency in charge of Relations with the Assemblies, Amadou Ali.

Marcel Niat Njifenji at the start of the plenary sitting announced the resignation of Abba Boukar and read out the section of the Standing Orders of the Senate which provides that in such circumstances, the alternate Senator replaces the substantive. The coming of Saki Lamine increases the number of female Senators to 21 out of the 100 elected and appointed Senators. According to the Electoral Code, the position of Mayor and Senator are incompatible. As such, Abba Boukar who after being elected Senator also got the position of Mayor, had to choose one of the jobs.
