At least seven bus passengers were killed in a road crash in the littoral Cameroonian town of Njombe-Penja, APA can report, quoting several sources on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s tragedy happened when the bus carrying the victims from Bafoussam (West) as it departed Douala (Littoral) ploughed into an approaching lorry laden with goods.

According to eyewitness accounts the crash was caused by a mistimed overtake by one of the vehicles involved in the accident.

A World Bank report issued in 2015 revealed that the mortality rate from road accidents in Cameroon fell by 31 percent between 2011 and 2014, the main causes of such tragedies being human error.

The state of disrepair of highways is also blamed for such deadly crashes.

Cameroon’s Transport ministry said the causes of road tragedies range from human errors (70 percent) to technical faults of vehicles (20 percent) and dilapidated highways (10 percent).
