Pupils of “Les Coccinelles” School Complex at the Unity Palace and the First Lady of Cameroon, Mrs Chantal Biya yesterday, December 21, 2015 at the premises of the school illuminated an adorned Christmas tree. This was during the traditional Christmas tree lighting ceremony that brought a happy moment for teachers, parents, pupils and the First Lady who also doubles as the matron of the school. The event took place in the presence of several members of government and the diplomatic corps.

At “Les Coccinelles” Primary School Complex, Christmas decorations went up everywhere, both outside and inside of the school buildings and walkways. The beautifully adorned Christmas lights could be seen wrapped around trees and flowers. The arrival of the school matron kick-started the Christmas party much to the delight of the pupils. Around an embellished Christmas tree that reflected the colour of the season, the over 90 pupils together with visiting and former pupils of the school, crowded their dear mother, “Mama Chantal” as she plucked sweets and other goodies from the tree and distributed to them. This was a special moment for the kids and their matron. The First Lady’s gesture was appreciated by parents, dignitaries and particularly pupils who were glad to be at the receiving end.

The close to three-hour ceremony was marked by some thrilling performances from the pupils such as sketches, songs, traditional dances and recitations about Christmas. In succinct displays, the kids, in the official languages, French and English, showed that they master the social and biblical meanings of Christmas. In songs, “Les Coccinelles” pupils expressed their desires in waiting for Christmas which is a period during which they are sure to receive gifts from friends, relatives and, above all, their matron.

Through recitations, the pupils told their audience that Christmas is a period of love and Jesus came to show people His love. As the world celebrates love, the kids through songs said Christmas is a time for merrymaking, a time for families to come together, a time for special entertainment and a time for joy.

They expressed gratitude to the First Lady for the care and concern she showers on them. As such, the local artists, Nar6 Laval, in one of his hits “Merci Maman” was there to accompany the kids in appreciating their matron. Just as the kids had said Christmas is a time to receive gifts, so it was for them and other children present at the event. All the former and current pupils of the school as well as visiting kids present at the ceremony received a special Christmas package from Mrs Chantal Biya. Besides sharing a common meal with the pupils, the First Lady also took time off to verify their classroom performances. In the midst of Christmas carols, the First Lady and the pupils took a souvenir picture while hoping for another fun-filled Christmas party next year.
