Student stabbed in Lycée Polyvalent in Douala

Total confusion reigned at Lycée Polyvalent, Bonaberi, Douala, on Tuesday October 13, 2015. It all started when a student secretly placed ‘mintumba’ (a local delicacy made of boiled ground cassava paste) in a teacher’s bag.

The stuff, which was tied to a string, was mistaken for a bomb. Panic gripped the school with a population of over 4,000 students after the discovery was made.

Information from the secretariat of the Principal of Lycée Polyvalent Bonaberi says it took courage for the plastic in which the paste was wrapped to be untied only to discover that it was ‘mintumba’.

Concerning the stabbing incident, Edimo, a student in Première D3, jokingly seized the purse of a female student, Nganjo Nano, to oblige her to follow him to his friend who wanted to talk to her.

Nganjo Nano, who did not want to talk with the boy, reported to one of the Association Presidents on campus who immediately went to Edimo, asking him to hand over the purse. Though he later handed over the purse, the President of the association and his group claimed that FCFA 10,000 was missing from the purse.

The confusion that started on Monday, October 12, 2015, degenerated into an open confrontation between the Association President’s camp and Edimo’s camp, leading to the stabbing of Ndema by a certain Ndende.

According to the Principal of Lycée Polyvalent, Bonaberi, Douala, Ndende who was wounded by the Association President’s group, though acting in self defence, should have reported the problem to school authorities rather than using a knife on a fellow student.

In addition to Ndende, three other students, including the Association President, Edimo and Doukoua, have been detained in the Gendarmerie Brigade N°1 in Bonaberi for questioning. Meanwhile, the victim, Ndema, underwent successful surgery at the Laquintinie Hospital, Douala.
