The Kalashnikov, weapon of mass destruction of elephants in Cmr

The weapon of war with trademark, Kalashnikov ("AK47") is today the most used by poachers for the massacre of elephants in the Eastern region Cameroon, according to the worldwide Fund for nature (WWF).

This revelation, made by the local office of the organization is involved in the aftermath of the arrest in Lobeke national park of two individuals with the said weapon and several ammunitions.

Some 100 Kalashnikov were thus seized from poachers since 2007 in the protected areas of the Eastern and southern borders with the Central African Republic and the Congo where more than 500 elephants were slaughtered, according to WWF.

Facing danger, the Government deployed in protected areas most threatened elements of the battalion of rapid intervention (BIR, an elite army unit).

In the same vein, the Director general of the WWF, Marco Lambertini, recently sent a message to the leader of the Cameroonian State, Paul Biya, suggesting the launch of an appeal in the direction of the General Assembly of the United Nations for the purposes of adoption of a resolution establishing a mechanism for the implementation of the resolutions in the fight against wildlife crime both in the countries of the subregion.

According to him, this provision will help the strengthening of cooperation between the countries of origin, transit and destination of wildlife products from crime in the sector.
