U.B. Dedicates New Science Building

Sketches, speeches and homilies characterised the grandiose public ceremony.

The recently-completed multi-hundred million FCFA building hosting the Science Department of the University of Buea (UB), opposite Bomaka-Buea, has been committed to the Almighty God in a grandiose public ceremony.

The ritual pulled crowds around the Catholic, Protestant and Muslim Chaplains of UB. The occasion equally saw the commissioning of over 50 newly appointed staff to positions of responsibilities in the institution, handing of scholarships to some needy students, honouring of retirees like the two former Vice Chancellors: Professors Lambi and Titanji; and show of allegiance to the Vice Chancellor for New Year 2013.

Reverend Father Celestine Diang, the Catholic Chaplain and Priest of the Diocese of Buea who led the inter-religious service, called for love and unity in his sermon and urged that UB remains the objective place of Science. A host of traditional rulers of Bakweri land also performed libations invoking peace in the UB campus.

The Vice Chancellor of UB, Nalova Lyonga, PhD, caused the ceremonial with the possible argument that there was need for God's protection in a 16.000-populated institution whose students and staff were often in bad blood resulting in strikes, back biting and envy. Nalova Lyonga reminded students enrolling into UB to stay by their academic work avoiding to be derailed by politics and excessive unionist tendencies.

It was the first time a major ceremony of the University was taking place in the precinct of the new Science Block from where the first batch of Medical Doctors had been trained and graduated last December.
