The Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova has inaugurated the Regional Office of UNESCO in Yaounde.
The Multi Sectoral building, located in the Bastos neighbourhood in Yaounde that shall represent ten countries in the sub-region was inaugurated by the UNESCO boss this 16th September 2014.
The Regional office for Central Africa reprsents Burundi ,Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic ,Gabon ,Congo, Equitorial Guinea, Democratic Republic Of Congo ,Chad and Sao Tome and Principe.
It was docorated with flags of the ten-member countries to give the building a multinational look.
The four-storey edifice with 79 offices partners with other national institutions involved in the eradication of poverty, enhancing sustainable development and free elementary education which are focus of the UNESCO.
Speaking during the ceremony,the Government Delegate to the Yaounde City Council, Gilbert Tsimi Evouna and the Minister of Basic Education, Youssouf Hadidja Alim, who is also President of the UNESCO’s National Commission reaffirmed Cameroon’s determination to maintain the Office.
The Inauguration ceremony was crowned by the signing of the golden book and family photographs.
The solemn ceremony was as part of the 48-hour official visit in the country, during which the pioneer female Director General evaluated and strengthened relations between Cameroon and the United Nations agency.
Madame Irina Bokova was later conferred with the Degree of Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Yaounde 1.
