UNOCA to seek help for CMR from UN Security Council

The head of the regional office of the United Nations for Central Africa (UNOCA) is concerned about the impact of the attacks on Cameroon.

The special representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of regional office of the United Nations for Central Africa (UNOCA), Abdoulaye Bathily, said he is 'deeply concerned' by the impact of the activities of Boko-Haram "on certain countries of the sub-region", in a press release issued Monday, 10th November.

"We will alert the Security Council on the severity of the realities observed on the field. These countries need support due to the many challenges they face in the battle against Boko Haram", revealed Abdoulaye Bathily, speaking specifically of Chad and Cameroon, Nigeria border countries.

"The case of Cameroon has particularly attracted attention. Lately, Boko Haram has multiplied attacks in the far North, leading to abductions and sometimes deaths. These criminal acts, which affect civilians and the military, are intolerable as well as the recruitment of young people by this terrorist movement," the release noted.

International assistance would be beneficial for the 17,000 Nigerian refugees who live in the camp of Minawao in the far North, in "precarious" conditions, added the head of the regional office of the United Nations for Central Africa. The war effort of Cameroon against the Boko Haram sect is currently fully financed by the budget of the State, without outside help.
