Conceived in the English-speaking tradition, the two-decade old university today boasts more than 24,000 students.
The University of Buea popularly known as “The place to be” was created in 1992 by a Presidential Decree following wide range University Reforms in the country. Fashioned in the typical Anglo-Saxon tradition, UB as it is affectionately referred to, now counts between 24.000 to 25.000 students spread across ten (10) establishments.
The establishments include among seven Faculties (Faculties of Social and Management Sciences, Education, Arts, Science, Health Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine). Two colleges (College of Technology and Higher Technical Teachers Training College) and the Advanced School of Translators and Interpreters.
The ten establishments are distributed to the three campuses the University has. The main campus in Molyko plays host to six Faculties, one college and school while Campus B situated at Mile 18 along the Muea road hosts the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The Higher Technical Teachers Training College by dint of the Presidential Decree that created it, is located in Kumba, Meme Division of the South West Region. The main Campus according to the Director of Development covers a surface area of over 270 hectares.
The higher institution of learning offers more than one hundred programmes from Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D levels all designed to comply with the European Bologna BMP system. Statistics gathered from the Registrar’s office indicates that the University of Buea has over 400 academic staff of all grades and 700 support staff.
As far as student’s lodging is concerned, the University can only boast of 102 rooms in their Hall of Residence which the Registrar described as modest. The Hall of Residence is reserved only for female students.
