Violence against women and disabled girls rife -Study

The revelation was made Thursday in Yaoundé by the group for the advancement of persons with disabilities.

93% of women and girls with disabilities are victims of all sorts of violence and 62.8% of verbal violence, 11.7% of physical abuse, 11.1% of sexual violence and 3.6% socio-economic violence. This is the result of the report of the study commissioned by the group for the advancement of persons with disabilities (Gapph) and conducted by the firm 'Future Africa Consulting'.

It was presented Thursday in Yaoundé, during a press conference organized by the Gapph, in the presence of the representative of that organization, Emmanuelle Tchotchom, Hilaire Kamga, administrator of the firm "Future Africa Consulting" and Alain Stoll, representative of the Ambassador of Switzerland in Cameroon.

Funded by the Embassy of Switzerland, the study was designed to highlight information about the types of violence, their heights, frequency, causes, consequences and their impact on victims and their communities.

In his words, Emmanuelle Tchotchom stressed that this initiative has as main objective to fight against this scourge that undermines the daily lives of women and girls living with a disability, with line of sight, changing their conditions of life.

Alain Stoll for his part said that this type of project must be able to contribute to building a society in which people with disability are putting into practice their spirit of creativity and skills to contribute to their own development and that of their families and communities.

At the end of the presentation of the results of the study, recommendations have been made with among others, the strengthening of actions in the promotion of research on people living with a disability, including women and girls in order to produce comprehensive, up-to-date, and exploitable statistics without neglecting the development of the information, awareness and education activities.
